Frequently asked questions
Why does vocal removal work on some songs and fail on others?
It relies on the vocal being centre-panned and identical in both channels, so subtracting one channel from the other cancels it. That holds for many older and simply mixed recordings. Modern productions widen vocals with stereo reverb, doubling and chorus, so parts of the voice exist only on one side and survive the subtraction — which is why you often get a hollow, half-removed vocal instead of a clean instrumental.
Why does the instrumental sound thin after removing the vocal?
Because everything else that was centre-panned is cancelled too — usually kick drum, bass and snare. That is unavoidable with this technique, not a bug. The result also collapses toward mono, since you are working with the difference between the channels. Expect a usable practice track rather than a release-quality instrumental.
Would an AI stem separator do better?
Usually yes — AI separation is trained to recognise voices and can extract a wide-panned vocal that channel subtraction cannot touch. The trade-off is that those models are far too large to run in a browser tab, so they require uploading your file to a server. This tool stays entirely on your device, which means instant results and no upload, at the cost of working only on centre-panned vocals.
