Frequently asked questions
Is reversed audio an exact mirror of the original?
Sample-for-sample, yes — the array of samples is simply read back to front, with no processing or re-encoding. Perceptually it is very different, because natural sounds have sharp attacks and slow decays. Reversed, that becomes a slow swell into an abrupt stop, which is why reversed cymbals and piano are such recognisable effects.
Can I reverse it again to get the original back?
Yes. Reversing twice returns the identical waveform, because the operation is its own inverse and nothing is re-encoded in between. This is worth knowing if you want to apply an effect backwards: reverse, process, then reverse again — a standard trick for reverse-reverb swells.
Why do reversed lyrics sometimes seem to say real words?
That is pareidolia — your brain aggressively pattern-matches speech-like sound onto known words, especially when someone tells you in advance what to listen for. Reversed audio is full of ambiguous phonemes for it to work with. It is an artefact of perception, not hidden content, and the effect largely vanishes if you listen without being primed.
