Frequently asked questions
How do I fix a recording where one side is much louder?
Pan gently toward the quieter side in small steps of 10–15% and check on headphones after each. Panning does not amplify the weak channel — it attenuates the strong one to restore balance, so the overall level drops slightly. If one channel is nearly silent rather than just quiet, panning cannot save it; you are better off using a single channel as mono.
What is the difference between panning and balance?
In practice here they are the same control: both shift the relative level of the two channels. The distinction matters conceptually — a true pan positions a mono source within the stereo field, while balance adjusts an already-stereo signal. Because this tool works on finished stereo files, panning hard left does not move the sound so much as mute the right side.
Will panning affect mono playback?
Yes, and it is the most common surprise. Many phone speakers, smart speakers and club systems sum both channels to mono. A file panned hard to one side survives that sum at reduced level, but anything you relied on being on the opposite side effectively disappears. Keep pans moderate if you do not know how the file will be played.
