Frequently asked questions
How does pitch shifting work without changing the speed?
The audio is cut into short overlapping grains that are resampled to change pitch and then re-spaced to restore the original duration. That restoration is a reconstruction, not a copy, which is why large shifts introduce a slightly grainy or metallic quality. Small shifts of one or two semitones are usually transparent; six or more rarely are.
How many semitones can I shift before it sounds artificial?
Around ±3 semitones is safe on most material. Beyond that, transients smear and vocals develop the characteristic chipmunk or robotic edge. Percussion tolerates less than sustained sound, because a smeared drum hit is instantly audible. If you need a large change and can accept the tempo moving with it, changing the playback rate sounds more natural than shifting.
What is the difference between this and the Tempo Changer?
This changes pitch and keeps duration; the Tempo Changer changes duration and keeps pitch. They are the two halves of the same problem. If you want both to move together — the natural effect of playing a record faster or slower — use the Slowed + Reverb tool, which alters the playback rate directly.
