Frequently asked questions

What peak level should I normalise to?

−1 dB is the sensible default: it uses nearly all the available range while leaving a sliver of headroom, so later lossy encoding to MP3 or AAC cannot push samples over the ceiling. Choose −3 dB or −6 dB if the file will be processed further, and only pick 0 dB for a true final master, since intersample peaks can still clip on some players.

Why do two files normalised to the same peak still sound different in loudness?

Because peak and perceived loudness are not the same thing. A heavily compressed pop track sits close to its peak almost constantly, while an orchestral recording touches its peak once and averages far below it. Both can peak at −1 dB and differ by 10 dB or more in how loud they seem. Peak normalising is the right tool for preventing clipping, not for matching how loud things feel.

Does normalising improve audio quality?

No — it applies one uniform gain to every sample, so the relationship between signal and noise is unchanged. A quiet, hissy recording normalised loud is simply a loud, hissy recording. What normalising does well is make a set of files consistent so a listener is not reaching for the volume control between tracks.

Are my audio files uploaded?
