Frequently asked questions
What kinds of noise can actually be removed?
Steady, unchanging noise — mains hum, air-conditioning drone, tape hiss, constant fan rumble — because a consistent noise floor can be identified and filtered. What cannot be removed is anything irregular: traffic, a barking dog, chair creaks, background conversation. Those overlap the voice in both time and frequency, so removing them removes the voice too.
What does the hum removal option do, and should I use 50 or 60 Hz?
It notches out the mains frequency and its harmonics, which is where electrical hum from cables and cheap power supplies lives. Use 50 Hz in Europe, most of Africa and most of Asia; 60 Hz in North America and parts of South America. Picking the wrong one leaves the hum untouched while removing a slice of your low end, so it is worth getting right.
Why does strong noise reduction make voices sound underwater?
Because aggressive settings remove real signal along with the noise — quiet consonants like s, f and t sit in the same range as hiss and go first. That is what produces the watery, lisping quality. Start at a low strength and increase until the noise stops bothering you, not until it is gone; a little audible hiss almost always sounds better than a damaged voice.
