Frequently asked questions
What auto-pan rate should I choose?
Slow rates of 0.1–0.5 Hz create a gentle drift that adds width without drawing attention — good for pads, drones and ambient beds. Rates of 1–5 Hz produce an obvious rhythmic sweep that becomes part of the arrangement. Above about 8 Hz the ear stops hearing movement and starts hearing tremolo, which is a different effect entirely.
How is this different from the 8D Audio tool?
Both move sound between channels; the intent differs. 8D is tuned for a very slow orbit meant to be experienced on headphones as a single sound circling your head. Auto-pan is a general-purpose effect at any rate you like, designed as a mix element. Use 8D for the full-song headphone effect, auto-pan when you want rhythmic motion on one part.
Should I auto-pan a whole mix?
Rarely. Sweeping an entire mix makes the kick and bass wander, which listeners find disorienting and which collapses badly on mono systems. The effect works best on one element — a synth line, a guitar layer, a percussion loop — while the rhythm section stays anchored in the centre. If you only have a finished stereo mix, keep the depth shallow.
